Sony's PlayStation 3 still rocks..and we tell you why!

Even though the PlayStation 4 (PS4) closing in on its first anniversary in a few months time, it is still far behind the install base of the PlayStation 3 (PS3). The PS3 is now around eight years old and has a fantastic library of blockbuster titles to chose from.

For those wondering if it is a worth getting one now it is a no-brainer. The prices have fallen way below its original 2006 $599 starting price. It has gone through a few makeovers, stood the test of time and is a very reliable console.
Think about it. The PS3 not only serves as a games console, it is a great Blu-Ray player and media streaming device. The PS4 is not yet capable of DLNA or any kind of media streaming. It is best used as a games console, Blu-Ray player or for streaming Netflix, Hulu Plus or whatever service is available in the corresponding region (which the PS3 already does).

Gaming purists judge game consoles by the games. In that department alone, the PS4 loses the battle by a huge margin. In fact, most games releasing on next-gen consoles are also being developed for the PS3 (and Xbox 360). FIFA 14, Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Need for Speed: Rivals and Watchdogs are all cross-generational titles.

The back catalog of PS3 games speak for itself. Grand Theft Auto IV, GTA V, God of War 3, Uncharted series, Devil May Cry series, Metal Gear Solid 4, Metal Gear Rising Revengeance, Heavenly Sword, Assassins Creed II, AC Brotherhood and a plethora of AAA titles are all available for the PS3. Granted some titles like ‘GTA 5’ and ‘The Last of Us’ are being re-released on the PS4 with updated graphics and other extras, but one needs to spend $399 on the console to first play these titles.

The best part about the PS3 is that online gaming on the PlayStation Network (PSN) is completely free. On the PlayStation 4, one needs to subscribe to the premium service PlayStation Plus for $50 annually to enjoy online multiplayer gaming. The PS Plus subscription does have its perks and works on all Sony’s current consoles and you get free games a month, there are a few drawbacks.

$50 may seem affordable, but not everyone is willing to spend that much to get games that needed to be downloaded due to slow internet speeds. At the same time, the games you download for ‘free’ are basically rentals good until your subscription is active.

A similar debate came up amongst fans when the PS3 first launched and its predecessor, the PS2 was around six years old and also had a vast library of AAA titles. The PS2 later went down as the best selling game console of all time and its life extended to that of the PS3 as well. Old is gold..and the PS3 is pure gold at least for now!
